A Training of Trainers Course Opens at the Rwanda Peace Academy

RDF military officers at the RPA during official opening of Training of Trainers course on Prevention of Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers.

The Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA) in partnership with the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers initiative are conducting “Training of Trainers course on Prevention of Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers”.

The two –week course officially opened today Monday, 5 June 2017 at the RPA training facility in Nyakinama, Musanze District, and will run up to 16 June 2017. A total of eighteen military officers from the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) are attending the course. They were selected from 60 RDF officers who attended the “Prevention of Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers Basic Course”, held this year in two phases, from 20 – 24 March and from 27 – 31 March 2017.

The objective of the course is to familiarise participants with a better understanding of the concept of child soldiering, analyze the reasons behind the use of children in armed conflicts, while at the same time equipping them with the right training methodology. The officers are expected to train the RDF personnel particularly the potential peacekeepers on pre-deployment training. The Ministry of Defence/ RDF in May 2016 signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation with the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative, Concerning Training Partnership on Combating the Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers.
