The “Prevention of Recruitment and Use of Child Soldiers Basic Course” started on  Monday 14 May 2018 at the Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA) and will run up to 18 May 2018.   

The official opening ceremony was presided over by Col. Jill Rutaremara, the Director of the Rwanda Peace Academy. The ceremony was also attended by the Director of Training at the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers initiative, Dr. Catherin Baillie Abidi, the Manager of Training at the same institution, Ms Jenifer McNeil, facilitators and co-facilitators.

The course is jointly organized by the Ministry of Defence, the Rwanda Defence Force, the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers initiative and the Rwanda Peace Academy.

 A total of twenty four (24) military officers from the Rwanda Defence Force will participate in this course.

The objective of the course is to familiarise participants with a better understanding of the concept of child soldiering, analyze the reasons behind the use of children in armed conflicts, while equipping them with the training and tools to prevent the recruitment and use of child soldiers worldwide.

The Rwanda Defence Force and the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning a training partnership on combating the recruitment and use of child soldiers in May 2016.
