A delegation composed of ten (10) officials led by Lt Gen (Rtd) Romeo Dallaire yesterday, Tuesday 22 May 2018, visited the Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA). They were received by Col Jill Rutaremara, the Director of the RPA, who briefed them on the rationale for establishment of the RPA, the mission and vision of the RPA, its programmes and activities, as well as its achievements. Thereafter, the delegation had lunch with course participants and also attended the afternoon training and discussion session. Twenty three RDF officers are currently attending the fourth basic course on Prevention of recruitment and use of child soldiers.
“The reason why we are so keen in this country and in the forces that are here, as we are involved in numerous other countries we want to engage in the training that you’re getting here, you are a leading nation in Africa but you’re also a leading nation in the world with capabilities of how to face significant operational threats that you face in the field in form of weapon system based on children,” Lt General (Rtd) Dallaire, told the Rwanda Defence Force officers.
“We will continue to provide you with more professional skills, knowledge and military capabilities that will give you advantage against the threats that you will face and bring your missions to success. Study well, work hard, take care of your troops and maintain the mission of advancing humanity by progressively eliminating the use of children as weapons of war,” he added.
The Rwanda Defence Force and the Romeo Dallaire Child Soldiers Initiative signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning a training partnership on combating the recruitment and use of child soldiers in May 2016.
