United Nations Staff Officers Course Opens at the Rwanda Peace Academy

The United Nations Staff Officers Course started today Monday, 9 September 2019 at the Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA) and will run up to 25 September 2019. The course was funded by the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) and is jointly organized by the Governments of Rwanda and the United States of America.

It was officially opened by Colonel Jill Rutaremara, the Director of the Rwanda Peace Academy. The Director of Security Cooperation at the United States Embassy in Kigali, Maj Christian Noumba, the U.S. Africa Command J5 Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI) Mr.  Matthew Dieter, and the lead facilitator Mr. Stein Ellingsen among others were present at the opening ceremony.

A total of 34 military officers from 9 African countries namely: Benin, Kenya, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo and Zambia are attending the course.

The objective of the course is to prepare officers at the equivalent ranks of Captain to Lieutenant Colonel for service as staff officers in the UN Multinational and Sector Headquarters, or within national contingents.
