UN Staff Officers Training of Trainers Course Opens at the Rwanda Peace Academy

The United Nations Staff Officers Training of Trainers (UNSO ToT) Course started today Monday, 21 March 2022 at the Rwanda Peace Academy (RPA) training facility in Musanze and will run up to 1 April 2022. The course was funded by the Government of the United Kingdom (UK) through the British Peace Support Team-Africa (BPST-A) and is organized in partnership between the RPA, the BPST-A and the United Nations (UN) Integrated Training Service (ITS).

The purpose of the course is to build the capacity of the Rwanda Defence Force personnel and their understanding of the UN Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials (CPDTM) as well as the Standard Training Materials (STM) for the United Nations Staff Officers Course. The course also aims to present the RDF trainers with the UN Integrated Training Service’s approach on training.  A total of 25 Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) officers are attending the training.

In his welcoming remarks, the Director of Rwanda Peace Academy, Col (Rtd) Jill Rutaremara pointed out that the United Nations Staff Officers Training of Trainers (UNSO ToT) Course was identified by the RDF during their training needs assessment. “This Training of Trainers Course was therefore envisioned to enable the RDF to have a pool of competent and effective facilitators who can train a significant number of potential Rwandan staff officers without necessarily relying on external trainers”, Col (Rtd) Jill Rutaremara said.

The course was officially opened by the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Rwanda, Mr. Fode Ndiaye.  He commended the contribution of the Rwandan troops in peacekeeping both in number and quality of troops in terms of values and principles that they uphold. He lauded all the partners for their role in enhancing the delivery capacity of RDF officers adding that “the Training of Trainers (ToT) course will have a multiplier effect because more RDF officers will be trained.”

The opening ceremony was attended by the representative of the British Peace Support Team (Africa), Lt Col Ash Wiseman. Present also at the ceremony was the Course Director, Lt Col Ibrahim Bolaji Abdulwahab (Nigerian) from the UN Integrated Training Service as well as three facilitators from ITS Mobile Training Team; Col Abraham Biwot from Kenya, Maj Phuc Nguyen Dong from Vietnam and Commander Alastair Howieson from New Zealand.
